On 10th March, (Sivaratri) Kshatriya Kshema Sabha met at Sundaravilasom Palace, to honor Princess Aswati Thirunnal Gowri Lakshmi Bayi and Sri Kumara Kerala Varma for the awards they recently received. Also honored was Jishnu for having won ‘A’ grade in playing Mridangam in the state Youth festival in Malappuram.
Princess Aswati Thirunnal is a prolific writer. She has several books to her credit including the one on Sri Padmanabha Swami Temple. Princess has been granted two awards lately- Sanathana Dharma Samiti Puraskaram and Swami Sidhinadananda Puraskaram.
In reply to President P G Sasikumar Varma's address, Princess Aswati Thirunnal thanked the Sabha for having shown recognition for the latest awards. She spoke about the importance of Sivaratri. Thiruvathira celebrations

Thiruvathira brings to my mind the childhood memories of having Arrowroot pudding to the heart's content. However there is more to this auspicious day than just that. On 27th of Dec, on the eve of Thiruvathira members of Kshatriya Sabha as usual met at Sundara Vilasom Palace to celebrate the event. After the Puja, Thiruvathira kkali was performed and later Ettangadi nivedyam served. Dinner was also served later.
Chithira Tirunnal Bala Rama Varma's Birth Centenary
2012 happens to be Chithira Tirunnal Bala Rama Varma, Travencore's last ruling Maharaja's Birth centenary year. He was born on 4th Nov 1912 and ruled Travencore from 1931 to 1949 until the monarchy ended and later remained Rajapramukh of the combined Travencore- Cochin state until reorganization of the state in 1956.
Kshatriya Khema Sabha Trivandrum organized a function on 29th Dec 2012 to mark the centenary year. The function was held at the Levee Hall, its grand pillars bearing witness to the function. Eminent persons from three different faiths were invited to speak on the occasion. Cardinal Clemis, Maulavi Jamaluddin Mangata, and Swami Vitasprihanandaji of Ramakrishna Ashramam.
The function started with the commemoration song by the Kala Samskarika Vedi. The song was written and compiled by K.L. Sreekrishna Das.
H.H Uthradom Tirunnal Marthanda Varma's absence was apparent. Due to health reasons, Maharaja could not attend the function. This denied the audience the much awaited opportunity to listen from a younger brother his personal experiences with his elder brother. Maharaja himself would have loved to reminisce them. Maharaja's message was read by Sri Prasad Varma, and Maulavi Jamaluddin Mangata's (who also could not be present) by Sri P.G Sasikumar Varma.
Both Cardinal Clemis and Swami Vitasprihanandaji spoke about the golden period of Travencore when Chithira Tirunnal ruled, and spoke about the many reforms during the time, Temple entry being a major one. Cardinal spoke about his closeness with the Royal family mentioning how he was presented with a photograph by Maharaja Uthradom Tirunnal before his recent visit to Vatican.
The function ended with vote of thanks by Sri C.K Krishna Dasan, convener Kalasamskarika Vedi.
Late Prof. T.K. Bhaskara Varma and his contribution to Hindi literature were remembered in the ' Bhasha Sangamam' held on 16-12-2012 at the press club building . His contributions by way of several books, radio plays and translations of books to Hindi were highlighted by the speakers. The occasion was a ' Bhasha Sangamam' under the joint auspicious of The Kerala Hindi Prachara Sabha, Hindi Vidyapeedam, and Rashtriya hindi sahithya sammalan held for the remembrance and analysis of the contributions of P.G. GovindapPillai, Dr. K.S. Mani, Dr .N. Raman Nair. Dr.T.K. Sarala Devi , Dr. N. Kuttan Pillai & Prof. T.K. Bhaskara Varma. The meeting was presided by Dr. N.A. Karim and felicitated by worshipful Mayer K. Chandrika. About two dozen prominent academicians spoke on the occasion. To name a few, Dr. N. Chandrasekharan Nair, Dr. K. G. Balakrishna Pillai, Dr. Raju, Dr. S Thankamaniamma, Dr Thirumala. Chandran, Dr. Sudha Varrior , Prof. N. Madhavan Kutty and many others. Smty. Priya Varma daughter of Prof. T.K. Bhaskara Varma recited a beautiful guzzle written by her father.
Next to the Onam celebrations, Regent Maharani, Sethu Lakshmi Bayi’s Birth Day celebration is the largest annual gathering of Kshatriya Kshema Sabha. This year like every other year, it was celebrated with much ostentation at Vyloppilli Samskriti Bhavan. The occasion brought speakers of great repute who enlightened the audience on subjects concerning issues facing society and culture today.

H.H Uthradom Thirunnal Marthanda Varma inaugurated the function by lighting the lamp. Maharaja spoke at length about the progress made by Travencore under the stewardship of Regent Maharani. Even at this advanced age he spoke with such clarity to the envy of most of those in the audience. He spoke about Regent’s initiative that paved the way for the temple entry proclamation. Maharaja in his talk reminisced the days with his aunt, and fondly recalled moments when she would affectionately bid him to sit by her side.
Sri K.Jayakumar IAS (Retd) delivered the Keynote address. He said that the defining characteristics of the Travencore Royal family were its simplicity. They were people’s rulers and their success in ruling lay in their simplicity .Unlike the rulers of today they were clear in their minds of their purpose. Today’s rulers have their eyes set on the advantages that come with governing. Individual gains over ride the larger gains. This has eroded good governance.
Sri Jayakumar also mentioned the declining cultural diversity in the light of financial independence. Financial independence has outlived human sensitivity. As an example he lamented the instances where mothers are sent to old age homes where they are denied the time and love of their children. A kind of irreverence has crept into the society today. It is looking at short term gains. Like the oracle's son in Sri M.T.Vasudevan Nair's famous movie Nirmalyam, who set out to sell his father's sword and anklet, we do not hesitate to sell our intangible assets for values less than they really possess.
Sri Jayakumar warned the media about their selective sensitivity. He urged us to understand the eternal values which will allow us to return to Cultural alignment which will in turn help us lead a life in tune with nature. His talk based on present day cultural issues of Kerala was exceptionally thought provoking.
The felicitation was by the District collector of Thiruvananthapuram Sri. K.N Satish IAS. Later Smt. Samyukta Varma, great grand daughter of Regent Maharani delivered the commemoration address.
There were several awards instituted by Maharani's family, seven educational, and one related to the media. The media award was presented to Sri M.B. Santhosh, Sr. Editor, Indiavision for his article on spurious drugs sale, which appeared in Kerala Koumudhi. The educational awards were announced by the chairman of the award committee Sri R. Rama Varma and media award by Sri. K.L. Sreekrishnadas.
One cannot but acknowledge the effort made by Sri M. Ravi Varma Raja the chief co-coordinator and Sri. P. G. Sasikumar Varma, President of Thiruvananthapuram Kshatriya Kshema Sabha and his team for the grand culmination of the function. Every year we revisit this occasion with great excitement. Due to its historical association with the Royal family, Thiruvananthpuram Kshatriya Kshema Sabha makes all efforts to make this function glittering and lively.
There were entertainments by members of the Sabha. Later a drama Kuchelan Kunhan Nair based on Vayalar Rama Varma's Poetry was staged. The function ended with dinner.
